Book Review - Erie Lackawanna in Color Volume 7: Mahoning Division by Steve Timko

E-mail Print PDF

erie_lack_v7Morning Sun books recently released the seventh volume in a series of books covering the Erie Lackawanna railroad. Past volumes have covered the line from east to west; the earliest years of the railroad; as well as a look at the railroad through the eyes of a single photographer. The Erie and the Lackawanna have also been given attention in the “In Color” series. In addition to the “In Color” series of books, Morning Sun has also covered the Lackawanna, Erie, and EL with their facilities series, color guides to freight and passenger equipment, through passenger service and various titles in the “Trackside” series. This seventh volume in the “In Color” series of EL books is the first to cover a specific division – in this case the Mahoning Division.

Veteran railroader and former EL employee Steve Timko authored the book and populated it using slides from the ELHS Archive collection. Coverage begins on the ore docks at Cleveland with a series of photographs taken in the final years of the EL. GP35’s and U25B’s are seen working the Riverbed as the Hulett unloaders empty lake boats of their loads of iron ore for the blast furnaces of Youngstown and beyond. Coverage of the 1st sub-division continues with images from the yards at Literary Avenue and East 55th. Several shots of the Cleveland-Youngstown commuter trains are also included. Some early Conrail images of un-touched EL motive power also fill the book including one at North Randall with a Burlington Northern RS3 in Spokane, Portland and Seattle paint!

Note About Former Railroad Employee Records

E-mail Print PDF

The Erie Lackawanna Historical Society does not have access to nor maintain in its Archives employee records from the DL&W, Erie or Erie Lackawanna. Two web sites that might prove useful to those in search of employee records are the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board web site and for former Erie Railroad employees and a possible lead for former DL&W employees, Jim Sponholz's web site pages dedicated to helping find former railroad employee records.
